How to submit your Self Assessment tax return using Bokio

To submit your Self Assessment tax return you must register with HMRC by 5th October in your second tax year to let HMRC know that you are now self employed. If you want to fill out your form online, you will also need to register on the HMRC website. If you aren’t already registered it takes up to 10 working days to receive the activation code to your account, so make sure you leave enough time. You can register with HMRC here.

You will then need to complete all of your bookkeeping for the tax year (06/04-05/04) in Bokio. We have a comprehensive guide on how Bokio can help with your Self Assessment tax return here.

Once you have finished your bookkeeping for the year and are happy that your figures in the Profit and Loss report in Bokio are correct, you can then go to your Profit and Loss report and begin transferring the figures into your tax return. Here’s a helpful video from HMRC on how to complete your Self Assessment tax return.

If you have a turnover of under £85,000 you just need to provide HMRC with the total profit and total expenses shown in the Profit and Loss report. If you have a turnover of £85,000 or over then you will need to give HMRC a breakdown of your profit and expenses. You can find out how to use your Profit and Loss report to breakdown your figures here.
